CLEANUP - Aisle 7!!

Well we made a real mess of the field in the 1st half as our Browns looked pitiful in every part of the game and were trailing 27-3 at halftime. There is nothing to say except it's a good thing that Browns P Spencer Lanning doesn't have any pockets to carry his wallet in his Browns uniform because if he did, Antonio, 'aka'- 'where's my dojo' Brown would have stolen it as he returned a punt and attempted to hurdle Lanning and turned it into a blatant karate kick to the face(mask). What should have been an ejection was only a 15 yd unnecessary roughness flag. It didn't really turn the game either way as the Browns had no answer for the thug Steelers on either side of the ball in the 1st half. We got out our shovels and immediately started to clean up the mess in the 2nd half with 2 scoring drives in the 3rd Qtr with rookie RB  Isaiah Crowell pounding the ball in for the TD's. Rookie RB Terrance West added a solid 100 yds to the offensive effort. We added a FG on the 1st play of the 4th Qtr and then Hoyer hit Travis Benjamin for a TD with about 11 mins to play to tie the game 27-27. The defense stuffed Big Ben and the Steelers the entire 2nd half. The Browns had a chance for a 53 yd FG with about 4 mins to play but chose to punt and botched a chance to down the ball at the 1 yd line. The defense held again and then we had a 3rd and 16 deep in our end and Shanahan called a WR screen(duh) that went nowhere. Our punt gave the Steelers good field position and 2 plays later kicked a 41 yd FG to win 30-27.  Lets hope the Browns can duplicate the 2nd half intensity and success next week against the Saints who are coming off of a loss to the Falcons. See you next Sunday! Go Browns!!

10'th Time's a Charm!

For the 1st time in 10 years our Cleveland Browns have won a home opener!! And better still they did it against a quality opponent in the New Orleans Saints! It was a game that the Browns seemed in control of the entire way even when they weren't in the lead. It was a very satisfying complete team win with individual and squad contributions in every part of the game. "The Baby Backs" RB's Crowell and West combined for 122 yds rushing and a TD and have already tied the total number of rushing TD's from last season. LB Paul Krueger finally showed why the Browns acquired him with constant pressure on Saints QB Brees and 2 sacks including 1 as Brees released a pass that resulted in S Tashaun Gipson's interception for a 62 yd TD!! LB Karlos Dansby also provided a key sack to stop a drive late in the game that gave the Browns the ball back to mount their final game winning 85 yd drive in the final 2 minutes! QB Brian Hoyer led that drive with key passes to WR's Austin and Hawkins and a pass to TE Barnidge on 4th down to keep the drive alive!! Billy Cundiff capped the drive with a 29 yd game winning FG!! Now this is "playing football like a BROWN"!! And it sure felt good to wake up Monday morning after a Browns win!! See you next Sunday! Go Browns!!!

Rag's to Riches

Just like in the 1st half against Pittsburgh in the 1st game of the season the Browns put themselves in a deep hole in the 1st half against the Titans and we were all hanging our heads as it appeared that the Browns had nothing to offer. The Browns went down 28-3 until late in the 2nd quarter and it looked like they would not recover as they made the backup QB for the Titan's, Charlie Whitehurst (my indian name is Whitehorse) look like a Pro Bowl QB. But the Browns turned it around in the 2nd half and held the Titans to 0 points and managed to put 19 points on the board, including 2 TD's from Hoyer to Travis Benjamin and a blocked punt safety, to win 29-28. I'm keeping it short again this week and have attached a link to an ESPN article on the game.

Here We Go Brownies, Here We Go!!

There are cheers to go all around as the Browns beat the Steelers 31-10 on Sunday! Offense, defense, coaching and front office all get props for the complete game win! Ghosts of Browns-Steelers games past made it hard to get excited in the 1st qtr as the offense stumbled but the defense stood tall stopping Big Ben and the Steelers on 3 consecutive drives. We stopped them on the second drive 3 times inside the 5 yd line and held them to a FG. On the 3rd drive, now in the 2nd qtr, the Browns held them to a FG attempt but when the Steelers muffed it the Browns took over on the 32 yd line. 5 plays later the Browns scored their first TD after a nicely designed 42 yd pass to Cameron and the 5 yd TD run by Crowell. Although QB Hoyers stats didn't show it, completing only 8 of 17 passes, he hit 5 different receivers for 217 yds 1 TD and no INT's and continues to lead this team like Browns fans have not seen for a long time!! Our RB's continue to produce a solid running game behind our O-Line with Tate and Crowell combining for 155 yds and 3 TD's. The front office gets props because the 2 leading tacklers on this defense are LB Dansby and S Whitner, both acquired in off season free agency, and we have depth at several positions. That depth is now necessary as we lost C Alex Mack and DL Armonty Bryant to injury. The Browns scored 2 more TD's in the 2nd qtr and added a TD and FG in the 2nd half while holding the Steelers to 0 additional pts until giving up a TD with 2 mins left in the game. This team appears to be for real and we could be 6-2 going in to the Thu night game against the Bengals! Here we go Brownies, Here we go!!!

Will the real Browns Please Stand Up

After the Steelers win I thought the new Browns were in town and then after the Jaguars loss I thought the old Browns were back. After we beat the Raiders 23-13 I'm not sure, but a win is a win! This was an ugly win that was due more to the defensive effort than anything the offense did. The 1st half was a FG duel with the Browns taking a 9-6 lead in to the locker room. In the 2nd half the defense gave the offense opportunities to score with another Gipson INT and a forced fumble by Whitner and 3 solo sacks by Krueger. Tate added a TD and Hoyer hit Hawkins for another TD to put the game out of reach even against a late TD by the Raiders. But we were still sitting on the edge of our seats with 7 sec left to be sure that our Browns didn't give it away somehow. Bring on the Buccaneers. Do you know what corn costs in Tampa Bay?.....A buck an ear...Go Browns!!

Ugly is as Ugly Does

The Browns are 4-1 at home this season and even though the last 2 wins were rather ugly, they are still wins and we are happy to be 5-3 and right in the middle of the battle for the lead in the AFC North!! That battle takes us to our ugly step-sister in Ohio the Cincinnati Bengals. But first the game against the Buccaneers which our Browns won 22-17! The Browns again struggled offensively in the 1st half only producing 3 FG's against the worst defense in the league. The Browns were driving near the end of the 2nd qtr but neglected to call a TO and wasted almost 30 seconds and settled for a FG. The good news is that the defense again held their own only allowing 1 TD for a 10-9 score at the half. QB Hoyer was productive in this game hitting 8 different recievers for 21 catches and 300 yds with WR Gabriel seeing a lot of that action including a key TD. Rushing was again weak with only 50 yds and C Mack being sorely missed. On defense S Gipson added to his league leading INT total and S Whitner getting one also on a nice tip from CB Haden while LB Krueger added another sack. We also blocked a punt and a FG!! Ugly is as ugly does and in this case it wins!! Bring on the Bungles!

We Are #1, HEY!!!

In a meaningful Thursday night Division game, the Browns defeated the Bengals 24-3 as our defense totally dominated Bengals QB Andy Dalton. The defense picked off Dalton 3 times putting their INT total to 13 on the year, they had 14 all of last year! After a terrible start to the season the Defense has really turned a corner and it couldnt have come at a better time! Our offense pounding the ball into the end-zone three times with all three of our RBs, with West leading the backfield in carries 26@ 94 yds and 1 TD. Hoyer was mistake free and notched a passer rating of 92.3. He managed the game well by spreading the ball around and keeping the chains moving while our running game and defense did their work. We had 3 different WRs with 40 yds catching +. The Bengals were terrible in all aspects of the game. Dalton had 86 yds passing while leading his team to 165 yds total offense! This week the Browns take on the Houston Texans with key matchups of DL JJ Watt against Joe Thomas and our O-Line; as well as Brian Hoyer against Ryan Mallett although they will never be on the field at the same time. We also need to stop RB Arian Foster if he plays as he is a game time decision with a groin injury. The Browns are all alone in 1st place and look to keep it this week with another win. Go BROWNS!!
